Home Base Iowa Initiative

UPDATE: As part of the Home Base Iowa initiative, Gov. Terry E. Branstad, joined by Iowa Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds, on Tuesday, May 26, 2014 signed into law the Home Base Iowa Act. In addition, Branstad signed Senate File 2352 providing additional homestead credit for disabled veterans.

Iowa Governor Terry E. Branstad and Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds recently created a new initiative called Home Base Iowa to recruit veterans and active duty service members for private-sector jobs opportunities in Iowa. Supported by Iowa’s utilities, the initiative is a non-profit, private-public partnership. Read the Office of the Governor’s official news release announcing Home Base Iowa.Since the November 12, 2013 announcement of the Home Base Iowa initiative, it has seen growing momentum, and the Governor and Lt. Governor — in addition to the utility industry — have made further announcements regarding additional features and benefits related to Iowa Home Base.

The Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) also joined a group of Iowa utilities and organizations in broad support of Home Base Iowa by providing information about employment opportunities for military veterans in Iowa’s utility industry. The IUB on November 15, 2013 announced in a news release it has partnered with the Iowa Utility Association (IUA), MidAmerican Energy Company, Alliant Energy’s Iowa utility, Black Hills Energy, the Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives (IAEC) and the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU) in support of the Office of the Governor’s Home Base Iowa initiative efforts. Gov. Branstad and Lt. Gov. Reynolds on December 5, 2013 announced a partnership with iHeartRadio’s Show Your Stripes, Clear Channel’s long-term public service campaign addressing the growing issue of U.S. veteran unemployment in communities across the nation, to help veterans find jobs. As stated in the Office of the Governor’s official news release distributed the same day, “In support of Home Base Iowa initiative, Clear Channel Media and Entertainment Iowa will unveil a new series of radio PSAs voiced by Gov. Branstad that will begin airing immediately and will drive listeners to and”

And on December 17, 2013, Gov. Branstad and Lt. Gov. Reynolds announced they have launched, a new website for Home Base Iowa. According to the Office of the Governor’s official news release, “The website serves as a comprehensive source for job services available to veterans in Iowa. The site features job postings, links to job fairs, and up-to-date information about educational opportunities, National Guard recruiting, job training, and much more.”

“Since the launch of Home Base Iowa, we have had numerous veterans, businesses, communities, and veterans organizations contact our office about the initiative,” said Branstad. “We are excited to launch this site to ensure veterans looking to establish themselves in Iowa have the most up-to-date information regarding the state’s job opportunities, welcoming communities, and ways to stay engaged with the military community.”

“Veterans possess a unique skill set comprised not only of technical skills, but also soft skills such as teamwork and problem solving,” said Reynolds. “Their skill sets, developed under some of the most challenging conditions imaginable, will be invaluable to Iowa’s businesses.”
