Why can't investor-owned utilities unbundle their rates, let the city take over distribution and keep selling the city utility generation and transmission at the current prices?

That might sound like a good plan, but we have an obligation to our existing customers to get the best price we can for power we sell on the open market, and market rates are higher. This underscores what we believe is a good rate that your city is getting. Even if we were able to sell the power at the same wholesale rate, the city would still incur so much debt and expense that electric rates would go up |
