Iowa Utility Association

Representing Iowa's Investor-owned Energy Utilities

The Iowa Utility Association (IUA) was formed in 1971 to develop, organize and promote improvement in the common business interests and conditions of Iowa's investor-owned electric and natural gas public utilities. Prior to the formation of the IUA and dating back to the mid-1940s, there had been an informal working relationship among investor-owned utilities to address statewide programs and industry issues.

Today, the IUA operates as a 501(c)6 non-profit corporation. From its offices near the Capitol in Des Moines, the IUA works with personnel from its member companies to develop, coordinate and promote common industry public policy. In addition, the IUA organizes various forums to advance public understanding of industry issues and economic development initiatives.

About: Investor-owned Utilities

The Iowa investor-owned utilities listed above serve 72 percent of the customers in the state using electricity and 90 percent of the customers using natural gas. The energy utilities above are regulated by the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) for rates and service. The IUB is a three member full time panel in the Iowa Department of Commerce with a full time professional staff which brings regulatory matters before them. The utilities' customers are represented by the Office of Consumer Advocate in proceedings before the IUB. The Office of Consumer Advocate is a full time position with a full time professional staff in the Department of Justice under the Attorney General. Other electric and natural gas utilities in Iowa are regulated by the IUB for service, but their rates are determined either by local city government units or by local boards of directors of member owners. The cost of regulation is included in utility rates paid by customers of our members.
